Welcome to the MSU VITA program

VITA is a nonprofit volunteer organization that provides income tax return assistance and preparation at no cost to the taxpayer! VITA is sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service and is organized by professionals and students across the United States.

At Michigan State University, our dedicated student volunteers help low-income individuals and families in the greater Lansing area complete federal, state, local, and/or foreign tax forms. Through our training program, MSU volunteers become high-quality tax preparers and learn to engage with clients in a friendly and professional manner. Although all majors will find VITA is extremely rewarding, VITA is a particularly enriching experience for accounting majors as it provides valuable career-related experience, in addition to providing outstanding relief to the community. Employers love to hire students who volunteer for VITA!

*Note: Only one client’s tax forms per session (a client cannot bring in another person’s income tax forms to be filled out as well). If you are late for your appointment, you risk the chance of having to reschedule your appointment.

Students can begin signing up for the program in October and training usually begins in November. Additional details and sign up procedures can be found at http://www.vita.msu.edu/
