About Us


VITA is a volunteer organization that provides income tax return assistance and preparation at no cost to taxpayers! VITA is sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service and is organized by professionals and students across the United States.


At Michigan State University, our dedicated student volunteers help low-income individuals and families in the Greater Lansing area complete federal, state, local, and/or foreign tax forms. We provide valuable career-related experience as well as outstanding volunteer experience that provides relief to the Greater Lansing community. The MSU VITA training program produces high-quality tax preparers and allows volunteers to gain client service experience by engaging with clients in a friendly and professional manner. While MSU VITA is particulary attractive to accounting majors looking to gain tax preparation experience, all majors are welcome to get involved and will find our program to be extremely rewarding. Additionally, employers know what MSU VITA is, which makes involvement in MSU VITA a wonderful resume addition!



Meet the Executive Board!

Cody Jakiel - President

Hello Everyone! My name is Cody Jakiel, and I am a senior at the Broad College of Business. This is my fourth year with VITA and third year as an E-Board member. My experiences serving clients while a part of VITA has been extremely valuable to my growth as both a person and professional. In my spare time, I like to run, hang out with friends, travel, and watch Big Brother. I look forward to serving the Lansing community with you! Thomas Miller - Vice President of Promotion & Recruitment

Hello everyone! My name is Thomas Miller and I am a senior at Michigan State. This will be my third year with VITA and second year on the executive board. I love VITA because it allows me to reach out to the community and help those around us in need. It is also a nice bonus that it helps teach me about taxes. In my free time, I like to play sports, listen to music, or hang out with friends. I look forward to spending another exciting year with this organization and cannot wait to see what the tax season brings. Lauren Phillips - Vice President of Training & Operation

Hi, everyone! My name is Lauren Phillips, and I am a junior, accounting major in the Broad College of Business. This is my second year in VITA, and this year, I am the Vice President of Operations and Training! In my free time, I enjoy running, reading, and getting coffee with friends, and I absolutely love traveling. This summer, I visited Russia, England, India, and Malaysia! On campus, I am on the Michigan State University Club Swim Team and, of course, I'm in VITA! In addition to learning how to do my own taxes, I have had the opportunity to interact with and talk to so many members of the Greater Lansing community. I look forward to working with you all!

Emma Lee - Finance Director

Hello everyone! My name is Emma Lee, and I am a junior Supply Chain Management major. This is my second year in VITA and first year serving on E-Board as Treasurer. I love VITA because it is a rewarding way to serve the community and give back as well as help me grow professionally. Outside of work and school I love to kayak and hike. I look forward to the upcoming tax season and meeting all of you!

Abby Li - Communications Director

Hello everyone! My name is Xinran (Abby), I'm a student at the Broad College of Business pursuing a Master degree in Accounting and Information System. I enjoyed the experience of volunteering as a basic tax preparer in VITA, and I decided to join the E-board to help to coordinate communication and promotion. I spent my summer working at Nexteer Automotive in Auburn Hills with their IT Internal Controls team. I am looking forward to meeting new and returning faces of VITA and helping out doing tax returns for clients during tax season!

Won Choi - Events & Recruiting Director

 Hello everyone, my name is Won Choi. I am a Senior studying Accounting and minoring in Economics. I have been with VITA for 3 years. First year as a basic preparer, Second year as a site coordinator, and now I am the director of events and recruiting. I will be graduating in December then moving to Chicago for my busy season internship with PwC in Assurance. I am extremely excited to meet with our returning or new volunteers this school year. Chihoon Lee - Foreign Student Tax Coordinator

Hi, my name is Chihoon Lee. I’m a senior student in accounting. This is my second year at VITA. I’m a new international scholar site coordinator. I had a great time working at VITA last year. I was in the international scholar site. I helped other international students or family to prepare their tax returns. I enjoyed talking with clients and experience in tax. Other than school and VITA, I love watching and playing soccer. I wish everyone has good time at VITA this year.

Rylee Egan  - Training Director & Site Coordinator

Hello! My name is Rylee Egan and I am a junior-year accounting major here at MSU. This is my third year with the VITA program, but will be my first year working with MSU’s VITA site. On campus, I work as a Resident Assistant in McDonel Hall, and am involved in various Broad student organizations. Outside of school, I like to work on art projects, spend time with my friends, family, and cats, swim, wander around, and occasionally play video games. I love VITA because of the opportunity it gives me to work with so many different people, as well as the personal and professional growth that I’ve gained through this program. Joey Zhao - Foreign Student Tax Coordinator

Hi all! My name is Weiye Zhao, you can call me Joey for short. I am a senior accounting student at Michigan State University. This is my second year with VITA and my first year working as an International Scholars Site Director. Working with VITA is one of my most appreciated experiences here at MSU, since it provides me an opportunity to serve the local community, meeting with new people. Besides that, I like working out a lot, if you see me at Powerhouse, don’t be afraid to say hi. Anyway, I’m truly looking forward to working with you all this upcoming tax season!

Shane Israel - Training Director & Site Coordinator

Hey everyone! I am Shane Israel and I am a senior accounting major this year. This will be my third year as a part of VITA and my first year on the E-board. VITA has allowed me to gain valuable real-life professional experiences while simultaneously creating a huge positive impact for the community and I am looking forward to serving as a Co-Director of Volunteer Training this fall! My interests include volleyball, paddleboarding, and listening to music. I hope to see everyone who reads this at the training sessions this fall (I promise taxes aren’t that boring!)

Haowei Wang - Foreign Student Tax Coordinator

My name is Haowei Wang. I am a senior majoring in accounting and minoring Japanese. It is my second-year volunteering for VITA and I am honored to have this opportunity to serve the local community through VITA again. I love traveling, playing video games, and watching movies during the free time. I am excited to be returning to VITA for the upcoming year and be part of this excellent organization again.

Jasper DeJesus - Training Director & Site Coordinator

Hi everyone! My name is Jasper DeJesus, and I am a senior accounting student here at Michigan State University. This will be my fifth year with VITA and my second year serving on the executive board. VITA has been a highly rewarding program to me, both personally and professionally. It sparked my passion to serve my community, as well as my interest to pursue accounting as a career field. Outside of VITA I love ballroom dancing, cooking, American Sign Language, visiting new places, Christmas lights (yes, even out of season), and spending time with my friends.
